Bamberg
Just FYI. 2 blogs are posted today!
It was a quiet evening yesterday. At least for me! I did not partake in dinner or any of the lounge festivities. Feeling lousy on a holiday 'stinks'!
Like Nuremberg, the cruise boat docking area is in the modern industrial area of Bamberg. If you build a waterway new business will spring up. So another bus ride was required to get into the old city. The good news was that it was only a 10 minute ride this time.
Bamberg has one of the best preserved examples of medieval architecture in all of Europe. It received no damage during the war. It has examples of Gothic, Baroque, and Romanesque architecture. It is fascinating to see timber style buildings that are so old still being used.
Bamberg's prosperity has always been linked to water. It was the starting point for shipping on the Main River (pronounced Mine) and now is the northern starting point of the Main- Danube Canal. It also has a 12,000 student university.
Our tour was a wet one. It rained the entire time that we were out. And I will not even mention that it was only 14 degrees. I guess that I just did! Our guide was a university student. She is studying Geography, French and Italian. She wants to become a teacher. She was quite good.
Before returning to our boat, we purchased a couple of bottles of 'Smoky Beer'. It has been described to us as having the smell of 3 day old socks and tastes like you are drinking from an ashtray. Sounds yummy! You either love it or you hate it. But as the saying goes, 'when in Rome do as the Romans do' or in this case as the Bambergians (I am pretty sure that is not a word) do. We will see how it tastes. For me, maybe tonight. For Sue maybe not. I am feeling considerably better than the last 2 days. Sue, on the other hand, is now beginning to struggle.
PS
I can feel a 'RANT' coming on in the not too distant future. And the topic just might be about fellow travelers!
